Brave Men

Happy 4th of July !! Independence Day,,, the day that the Founding Fathers signed the declaration of Independence,,, these men signed ,,, knowing that they would be - and most were already - condemned by the King of England, that if they were captured - they would be immediately executed. Clearly they felt that strongly about being free from the rule of a Monarch, and starting their own government. Would we be as brave today? Signing our name to a document knowing It could mean our death ? I would say we are not sure of the answer,,, many of us do not like to even take an unpopular stand on an issue for fear of criticism, and ridicule. SO we remember today as the day that Brave men stood up for Freedom,,

70 years ago today,,,Henry Louis "Lou" Gehrig delivered his "Luckiest Man" speech,,, Knowing full well that he was dying ,

"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans.

The crowd applauded for a full two minutes,,,and Gehrig visibly shaken stepped away from the Microphone with tears in his eyes,,,, the Yankees retired the number 4, and in December of 1939 he was elected by special vote to the Baseball Hall of Fame - less than 2 years later he was dead.

Today,, to Honor the Man,,, ,At every game , someone from the Home Team will read the Gehrig speech, and the Teams will be wearing a special patch on the uniform for ALS awareness,,,,
